Updated: Nov 29, 2023

Looking for an easy but delicious meal to make for dinner? Look no further!

So you have some stew meat that you've been wanting to use but can't figure out what you would like to do with it. Well I have just the recipe for you! It can be made in the good ol' Dutch oven, but also works really well in the crockpot!

Delicious tender beef, with potatoes, carrots, and peppers, simmered slowly in a delicious paprika sauce. Amazing on its own, or served over rice! This meal also freezes very well! Make a large batch and have it on hand for a quick meal! Takes around two and a half hours with prep time, but once its in the crockpot you can just set it and forget it!

Hearty Hungarian Beef Stew

Everything you will need!

You will either need a Dutch Oven or a Crock pot to make this recipe.

  • 2 pounds Beef Stew

  • Salt and Pepper

  • 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil

  • 2 Medium Onion, Chopped

  • 2 Tablespoons All Purpose Flour

  • 4 Tablespoons Paprika

  • 3 Garlic Cloves, Minced

  • 1 Cup Dry Red Wine

  • 2 Cups Water

  • 1 1/2 Cups Beef Broth

  • 1 Pound Golden Potatoes, Chopped

  • 3 Large Carrots Chopped, or 3 Cups Baby Carrots

  • 2 Red Bell Peppers, Sliced

Let's get cooking!

  1. Take stew meat and pat dry with a paper towel, before seasoning with salt and pepper.

  2. Heat olive oil in Dutch oven, ( if using a crockpot, use any frying pan of your choice) and cook a third of the stew meat until golden on all sides. Repeat this step with the rest of the stew meat as well. Set meat aside.

  3. In the same pot or pan, add onions and garlic and cook until onions are soft.

  4. Once softened, add in flour and paprika and cook until fragrant, and flour is incorporated.

  5. Add in wine, and cook until thick, around 2 minutes.

  6. Add back in beef as well as 1 cup of water and your beef stock.

  7. If using a crock pot, transfer to crockpot, and turn on low for an hour and twenty five minutes.

  8. If using a Dutch oven, reduced heat to low, and simmer for an hour and twenty five minutes, stirring occasionally to be sure it does not stick to the pan.

  9. Once your time is complete, add in potatoes, carrots, and peppers. Stir in and cover again, leaving veggies to cook for forty five minutes.

  10. Enjoy your Hungarian Beef Stew on it's own, or over rice!

Another great way of serving Hungarian Beef Stew is making mashed potatoes, instead of adding them in, and serving the stew over the top like gravy! Please let us know if you tried and enjoyed this recipe!
