The faces you make when the lady with the grain comes out, not to give you grain, but to tell you to stop “breaking” the camera she has on you.
It’s a full time job to be a curious baby colt.
Annie is doing incredibly well. The other babies got weaned this week so she has a couple of buddies and is learning how to do life as a horse.
I will be forever grateful that God saw fit for us to keep her alive. Watching my kids work hard with us to do whatever it took to keep her healthy is a lesson I could have never taught. And watching this colt grow up with our girls is a blessing beyond description.
There are big dreams from little girls for sweet Annie.
Watching our oldest teach our youngest how to work with her and set her up for success is pretty awe inspiring. A reminder that every moment matters, that every thing we pour into them or blow up in front of them is there and surfaces whether we want it to or not. Thank God for His grace and perfection because I am certainly far from perfect. Watching all of these heartbeats, human, horse and mule alike grow and learn reminds me that I’ve done a few things right at least and that God’s grace and plan are so much greater and bigger than mine.
Growing up I was sure I wanted to move to a big city, chase a career and never have to get my hands dirty.
I’m SO grateful God knew the right thing for me and put me right here. Next to an amazing man, with jeans that always have grease on them, dirty boots and hands and hearts striving towards Him, even on our worst days, watching our babies turn into incredible humans.

What a difference 5 years makes. It is such a blessing to watch our kids grow and such a huge blessing to have the photos to reference and help remember just how fast time is going.

It doesn’t get much better for a wife than to come in to a man in Wranglers making supper. It was a great end to a busy day, Salisbury steak meatball styled with fresh cabbage from Long Step Farm
We are so fortunate to have such amazing fresh food at our fingertips and I am so blessed to have a husband with such a diverse and willing skillset.

I used to take a lot more time to share here and not only keep everyone updated on what we are doing but let people into what the inside of the ranch looks like. I am remiss in letting that fall away in the sheer business of keeping it all alive and going. But today I am 2,000 miles away from the actual ranch, in Alaska with Jordan working. And while the responsibilities follow me on the computer and phone there is nothing to walk outside and tend to. That is an oddly liberating and debilitating feeling all at once. When you know that the living creatures you have been graced with stewardship of are far out of your reach you lean a little harder on your faith than normal, and for a mom like me you have to also learn to lean a little more on your identity in God rather than in being the caretaker of many. Being 2,000 miles from my kids and from all of the other heartbeats that need me reminds me that it is so easy to wrap your identity up in taking care of everyone and loose sight of your identity in Him. That He made you a unique and gifted one of His children, no matter who does or does not need you in this moment.

As I sit watching the sun shine on the Gastinuea Chanel on a rare sunny day in Juneau Alaska it washes over me that goodness of God. When I started this journey with Jordan as my husband I had no idea what we were in for. The highs and lows and everything in between were so far beyond my imagination. I am so grateful that God does not let us write our own stories. Mine would have been woefully boring in comparison to the one God has written for me.

When we got married I had barely ever been around horses. I married a man that is as comfortable riding a horse into the backcountry with a string of 10 mules behind him as he is driving a car across town. A man who prefers the former to that latter by far. As a 31 year old, recently divorced, mother of two babies my confidence in my own abilities was shaky at best and my commitment to staying uninjured and alive was quite high.

There are babies everywhere around here. Spring is filled with new life, lots of work and so many blessings. Every heartbeat comes with a little extra weight and many extra prayers. God has been good to us and it is an immense blessing that he entrusts us with so much.

Baby Laine is rapidly learning that humans are not all that bad. Especially when they find the spot that neither her or mom can reach.
