The Story of Belle the Sourdough Starter

Why Belle?

The name came from my family's livestock brand, which is the shape of a bell.  It was originally registered by my great-great-grandmother, Isabelle. Though livestock was not a part of my family's livelihood for several generations it is now the majority of it for my husband and I. This single iron brand is valuable for so many reasons, one of which is the history it represents. Belle was a strong lady who settled in a very tough part of a tough state.  She raised up her babies and her livestock and I wouldn’t be here without her. As I bake I often think of the women before me and all of the hats they had to wear, not really much different than the ones I wear now. So this strong starter was named Belle, in honor of the strong woman that came many generations before me.
